Smart Home Automation - Lighting Control

Several components are tied into the lighting control of the home.  Lighting can mean letting in more or less natural light/heat during the day or the same with interior lighting at night.  These components comprise of devices that control the wired lighting, window treatments and drapes, electrochromatic glass, and occupancy/light sensors.

With most basic lighting control systems you can set all controlled light levels to be at 85-90% of maximum when on or less depending on need.  This reduces the amount of energy needed to power the light and it also extends if not doubles the life of the bulb.   Interestingly enough, studies have shown that most people perceive 90% as if it where full on or at 100% luminosity.

These control systems can also adjust window treatments or drapes.  Control of these mean that they can adjust their height in the window (up/down) letting in more or less heat/light.

These lighting systems can also include occupancy/light sensors which can detect when the room is occupied and if there is enough light.  When its not, or soon after its not, the lights go off. Or when it is occupied and its dark the light goes on (think most bathrooms).

The smarter home automation systems can take all of these look at the data and determine what happens.  It can be programmed to know exactly where the sun is, based on the time of day, collect information from light sensors in the rooms and also collect information from the occupancy sensors to determine if light is even needed.  If light is needed it can evaluate whether or not raising the drapes in the window will provide enough.  Also, depending on the size of the room it may raise the drapes and turn on only a single bank of lights where the direct sunlight cannot reach. Of course, a room control switch or voice command can override this setting if needed.  Still yet, We are seeing this as a growing trend within commercial buildings and there is no reason why this cannot be applied to the residential lifestyle.
