Green Smart Home Automation - Climate Control

Climate control works with the heating/cooling and humidifying systems of the home.  These systems belong to a group called HVAC.  The different HVAC systems include: Package, Split, Radiant Floor, Straight Cool/heat, Heat pumps, and Geothermal/ground sources. 

The most common Climate Control device is the programmable thermostat.  You set the time, temp and the day of the week and the system then runs on that schedule with little variation.  There is no variation or smarts to the system other then winter/summer to know if anything environmentally has changed. 

A Smart Home Automation system can work in-conjunction with other sub-systems to more accurately control the climate system for comfort and efficiency.  This is the main difference between programmable (above) and the controllable climate system of a Smart Home. HVAC control may include multiple heat and humidity sensors (wall and ceiling) in several locations in and out of the home and run tandem with local weather predictions or an Internet weather service.  Just with these components, your house will become smart enough to know when the systems should come on or off to provide optimal living conditions and maximize efficiency in doing so. 

When you add in the other sub-systems such as lighting and security you expand the systems capability to be even more efficient.  As with lighting, the system can determine room occupancy and also adjust window treatments to maximize heat/cooling by either allowing or not allowing the natural sunlight to come through.  It can also determine if opening ventilation to the outside and if that will have a greater effect on climate then window treatments or the thermostat.  When you add in the Security component you have a single point of access that can control all your lighting and climate controls and that of arming the alarm system.  When you select Away all is off or running on a minimum support level (above freezing in most mountainous locations).
